18 new correctional officers sworn in at the Middlesex Sheriff's Office

After completing nearly 14 weeks of rigorous basic training, 18 new corrections officers were sworn into the Middlesex Sheriff's Office on June 6, according to a press release.

The new officers heard remarks from Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian, Medford Police Chief Jack Buckley, and Tufts University Public Safety Executive Director and Police Chief Yolanda Smith.

“For 332 years, members of the Middlesex Sheriff's Office have played a vital role in ensuring public safety,” Koutoujian said during the ceremony at Tufts University. “While the challenges we face evolve, our mission remains the same: to keep those in our care safe and ready to return to their families – and to our communities – ready to be productive, engaged citizens.

“I am confident that these 18 new officers will ensure that we accomplish this mission with dignity, pride and professionalism. »

In the new class of officers, nine have family ties to law enforcement; five have a post-secondary diploma; and four have military experience. Additionally, seven of the new officers are bilingual (in Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Chinese, French and Vietnamese).

During the training academy, these officers completed classroom and practical work. Some topics covered were implicit bias, mental health first aid, cognitive behavioral theory, de-escalation and communication, first responder training, suicide prevention, and defensive tactics.

The June 6 graduation was the 16th held during Koutoujian's tenure and the fourth since February 2023. To learn more about the Middlesex Sheriff's Office, visit middlesexsheriff.org.
