16-year-old charged with murder in Des Moines apartment stabbing

DES MOINES, Iowa — A 16-year-old has been charged with murder in connection with a stabbing at a downtown apartment complex Tuesday morning.

At approximately 10:15 a.m., Des Moines Police Department officers responded to a report of a stabbing at an apartment complex located in the 900 block of Oakridge Drive. When first responders arrived on the scene, they found a 19-year-old man with a stab wound to the neck. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries. His name has not been released.


Des Moines police announced Tuesday evening that an arrest had been made. A 16-year-old man is now charged with first-degree murder as an adult. His name will not be released until after his first court appearance on Wednesday.

Police say the stabbing occurred during an argument between the victim and the suspect. Further investigation revealed that the suspect had premeditatedly stabbed the victim in the neck, police said.

The investigation into the stabbing is ongoing and further information will be released as it becomes available.
