16-year-old boy fatally shot outside Scarborough Square identified

Police have identified a teenager who was fatally shot Saturday afternoon in the L'Amoreaux neighborhood of Scarborough.

The shooting happened in a parking lot near Birchmount Road and Glendower Raceway, just south of Finch Avenue East.

Footage from the scene shows the shooting appears to have happened outside a convenience store.

Toronto police said they were called to the area shortly before 2 p.m. after receiving several calls reporting a shooting.

According to investigators, an altercation broke out and a man was shot.

Police said two shooters were involved. One of them fled the area on foot, while the other fled in a white SUV.

The victim showed up at the hospital a short time later with gunshot wounds, where he later died.

He has now been identified as Kayelin Rider-Downey, 16, of Toronto.

The teenager is Toronto's 37th homicide victim of the year.

The first suspect is described as a black man who was last seen wearing a red hat and red shirt.

The second is also described as a black male. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie.

Filming

So far, investigators have also not indicated what the motive for the deadly shooting might be or what exact circumstances led to it.

Det. Sgt. Aaron Akeson, of the TPS Homicide and Missing Persons Unit, told media Saturday evening that he believes the shooting was targeted, although he could not say for certain that the victim was the intended target.

The Toronto Police Homicide Squad is handling this ongoing investigation.
