15-year-old man tries to distract sheriff's deputy as swarming crowd kicks and hits patrol vehicle amid street takeover, police say

A 15-year-old man tried to carjack a sheriff's deputy as a swarming crowd kicked and punched the deputy's patrol vehicle during an early street takeover of the month, police said.

The teen allegedly opened the driver's door of the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department vehicle and attempted “to pass the deputy and his patrol unit” at a Highlands intersection, the Associated Press reported, citing a department statement from the sheriff on Thursday.

“These individuals are not afraid of law enforcement and their behavior is very worrying.”

The deputy was able to close the door and walk away from the melee shortly after midnight on May 11, the AP reported, adding that video obtained by detectives shows an “unruly” crowd hitting the window of the deputy and kicking the vehicle, leaving a cracked windshield. .

The outlet, citing the sheriff's department statement, said about 100 people gathered at the intersection for an illegal street takeover, and a fire hydrant was opened to facilitate the skidding of participating vehicles.

The 15-year-old man was arrested at his Menifee home on suspicion of attempted carjacking and felony vandalism, the AP reported.

Gloria Huerta, a spokesperson for the department, told the outlet that the deputy's decision to leave was likely the safest choice: “These individuals are not afraid of law enforcement and their behavior is very concerning.” »

How do observers react?

More than 1,000 comments can be found under the AP article in Yahoo News, and as you might expect, the commenters aren't too happy with the teen in question — or with the direction American society is heading :

  • “Charge him like an adult, don't release him without high bail, don't go easy on him by taking him by the hand and bailing him out of jail,” one commenter wrote. “Nowadays, teenagers don't worry about the consequences because prosecutors pamper them. If they are willing to commit the crime, then they should be willing to spend time with toughness.[ed] criminals.”
  • “This is California,” another commenter said, adding that “the charges will be dropped and this behavior will continue until the laws are changed, resulting in consequences for people who break the law. I don't wouldn't be surprised if [the] officer in [the] The car was not used as a scapegoat and blamed for all the trouble. Sad to see how much our laws have changed, criminals have more rights than people who obey the law. »
  • “Has anyone noticed that the children went [off] The deep end once our government said they could no longer be hit/spanked? » asked another commenter. “At the same time that school shootings started happening? I was punished several times with the belt, we had guns in the truck when we went to school, we all had pocket knives, no one was ever stabbed. I really don't believe this is all a coincidence. »
