14-year-old boy fatally shot while riding scooter in South Seattle identified

A 14-year-old boy who was fatally shot while riding a scooter in South Seattle last week has been identified.

According to the Seattle Police Department, the teenager was shot around 8:20 p.m. on June 27 in the 7400 block of Rockery Drive South, which is in the city's NewHolly neighborhood.

On Monday, the King County Medical Examiner's Office identified the 14-year-old boy as Ayub Asad Hashi. The medical examiner said the boy's cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest and ruled the death a homicide.

Neighbors told KOMO News they heard a gunshot and then saw the teen on the sidewalk.

“I checked his pulse and I think he was already dead. I did everything I could,” neighbor Ann Okwuwolu told KOMO News.

Responding officers provided first aid to the boy until Seattle Fire Department paramedics arrived on scene and transported the 14-year-old to Harborview Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

San Francisco police said officers chased a vehicle that was seen fleeing the area after the shooting. The pursuit was then handed over to Washington State Police and the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office and ended in Everett, where three juveniles were arrested.

According to the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, two of the suspects are 16 and the other is 14.

Authorities said the three juveniles were taken into custody, but not on charges related to the shooting. Investigators were trying to determine what role, if any, the suspects played in the teen's killing.

A family member of the 14-year-old told KOMO News that the teen had just graduated from high school. Neighbors said they had known the boy since he was a toddler and that he grew up in the same neighborhood where he died.
