14-year-old arrested on gun charges at Dorchester Park

Boston police arrested a 14-year-old boy in a Dorchester park Saturday evening after discovering he was carrying a gun, officials said.

Police were monitoring an event at Harambee Park shortly before 7 p.m., when officers noticed a teenager clutching a fanny pack under his arm, according to a statement released by Boston police. When officers approached him, the teen fled into the crowd and police lost sight of him, according to the release.

Police then observed the teen sitting on a ledge with a group of people and approached again, this time ordering him to stand up so officers could search him, according to the release. Upon further investigation, police found a Smith and Wesson pistol in the teen's bag, with 13 rounds of ammunition and a destroyed serial number, the release states.

The boy, whose name has not been released due to his age, was arrested and faces delinquency charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawful possession of a device high capacity power supply and deterioration of the serial number of a firearm. according to the press release. The teen is expected to be arraigned in Boston Juvenile Court.
