12-year-old boy in custody following fatal shooting of 14-year-old cousin in Brownsville

Police now have a 12-year-old boy in custody in a shooting that left a 14-year-old boy dead in Brownsville Sunday morning.

The victim was identified as 14-year-old Jasai Guy. He was found shot to death in his own subdivision. Police say the 12-year-old currently in custody is their cousin.

The 12-year-old is being held on charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless causing of death, criminal negligence with homicide and criminal possession of a weapon.

The incident took place around 10:30 a.m. Sunday inside the Howard Houses, according to the New York Police Department. The police found Guy dead, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Since then, a vigil has formed outside Guy's house – lined with granola bars, cookies and chips – as an ode to the innocence of a young teenager victim of gun violence.

Jasai Guy now joins 12 others who were killed last year in that neighborhood, according to city data.

“Unfortunately, this is a dilemma that we face and face and we have to resolve it one way or another,” said Pastor James Nicholson, of Brownsville. “As a pastor and a community leader, we really need to focus on, I think, it starts with family dynamics and we need to strengthen those families.”

Police are still investigating the circumstances of this shooting. Neighbors told News 12 they thought the two children were playing with guns.
