12-year-old arrested after alleged stabbing at Montrose Bay High School

A 12-year-old has been arrested after allegedly stabbing a fellow student at a high school in Hobart's north.

Police were called to the incident at Montrose Bay High School around 1pm on Friday afternoon.

A Tasmania Police spokesperson said the child was taken into custody at the scene, while the victim sustained “non-life threatening” injuries.

“A knife allegedly used during the incident has been seized by police and there is no ongoing risk,” they said.

Concerned parents who contacted Pulse as the incident unfolded voiced concerns that the school was not placed into lockdown.

A Department of Education spokesperson said student and staff safety was their “highest priority” and that support was being put in place.

“Today there was an incident between two students at a southern high school,” the spokesperson said.

“The school followed procedure quickly ensuring the safety of the broader school community.”

“Learning Service staff are on site and supporting the Principal and Leadership team as required.”
