11-year-old girl identified as victim of fatal Memorial Day drowning in Alameda Creek

A child drowned in Alameda Creek on Memorial Day and, despite the efforts of first responders, that child died at the hospital. We now learn that she was 11 years old Dana Nino Gonzalez.

KTVU has the heartbreaking story of a child who drowned in Alameda Creek on Memorial Day, in a part of the creek near Niles Canyon Road, a few miles northeast of Fremont. The incident happened shortly before 6pm on Monday, May 27 and, while the child was rescued from the water, she died in hospital while being treated.

Nine days later, we now learn the identity of the child. KTVU reports drowning victim was 11 years old Dana Nino Gonzalez, who died despite the efforts of Fremont police and firefighters, along with several community members who jumped into the creek to try to save her.

“Through their combined efforts, first responders rescued Dana from the creek,” the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook Tuesday evening. “Paramedics transported Dana to Washington Hospital, where medical staff continued to take life-saving measures. Unfortunately, Dana did not survive.

Young Gonzalez got stuck in a hole in the creek's flow control structure, according to KPIX. The Alameda County Sheriff's Office said it is investigating the case further.

“This tragedy saddens us,” adds this office. “We would like to remind you of some safety measures to follow when practicing summer activities near watercourses. Obey posted warning and caution signs, make a safety plan, wear safety equipment such as a life jacket, never swim alone, and avoid getting into the water if you do not know how to swim or if you are unfamiliar with weather and water conditions.
