1 teenager killed and another teenager shot at Bellevue Park

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Metro Nashville police say a 13-year-old boy was shot and killed and his 16-year-old sister was injured in a shooting at Red Caboose Park in Bellevue shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said there was a fight between women in a parking lot at the popular park when other teens joined the fight. Someone pulled out a gun and fired.

The 16-year-old girl was able to get to the Nashville Fire Station near the park. His 13-year-old brother was hit several times and taken to hospital where he died.

“It’s a bad night for Nashville,” Metro Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron said at the scene. “Two teenagers, brothers and sisters, aged 16 and 13, are victims of violent crimes.”

The 16-year-old was able to provide information about those involved in the shooting. Police said officers found the person matching the suspect's name provided by the victim, walking about a quarter mile from the park on Highway 70. The person is being held for questioning.

Aaron said most of the teens involved in the fight appear to be middle school students.

“It’s a very popular park. Honestly, they’re kids,” Aaron said. “The people concerned are college students. We will get to the bottom of it to see what the trigger is that caused all of this.

There were several witnesses in the park who saw the shooting who were not those involved. Detectives are questioning these people.

Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell released a statement on social media following the shooting.

“My heart breaks tonight for the families who experienced firsthand the tragedy of gun violence in a Bellevue park. I am grateful to the first responders who immediately provided assistance and to the Metro Police officers who quickly apprehended a potential suspect. We are awaiting further details on the investigation,” O’Connell said.
