1 suspect and 1 bystander shot at Kroger in Colerain Township during police investigation

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Two people – a suspect and another bystander – were shot at the Kroger in Colerain Township.

At a news conference Wednesday, Colerain Township Police Chief Edwin Cordie said officers went to the Kroger on Springdale Road just before 4 p.m. They were involved in an investigation into a suspect who was in the store.

Officers approached the suspect outside the building. Cordie said the suspect pointed his gun at the officers and then ran into the store.

The suspect and police exchanged gunfire inside the Kroger. The suspect was shot and taken into custody.

He said a bystander was also hit, but he had no information on the condition of either person, but both were expected to survive. Cordie did not say whether either was taken to hospital.

Cordie did not explain why the officers were investigating the suspect, but per standard protocol, both officers will be placed on administrative leave.

The shots fired were picked up by police radio traffic:

“We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at our Colerain Marketplace Kroger store located at 3636 Springdale Road,” a Kroger spokesperson wrote in a statement.

“We are cooperating with local law enforcement, who have secured the store and parking lot. The store will remain closed while the police investigation continues and we have established counseling services for our associates.
