1 person killed after chase with RCSD deputies

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – One person was killed Friday afternoon near Columbia after a chase with the Richland County Sheriff's Department.

The pursuit ended around 2:30 p.m. when the driver left the road and struck a tree, according to Master Trooper William Bennett of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Richland County Sheriff's deputies began pursuing the driver for a traffic violation, according to a release from their department.

The driver sped away from the deputies after they activated their blue lights, according to RCSD.

The driver, who was traveling in a 2009 Ford Fusion, was heading east on Colonial Drive. The driver left the road at the intersection of Hurst Drive and struck a tree.

The driver was transported to Prisma Health Richland for his injuries and died at the hospital a short time later.

The sheriff's department said the pursuit took place over a “very short distance.”

The Richland County Coroner's Office has not yet released the name of the driver who died.
