1 person found dead and 2 still missing after floods and landslide in Swiss Alpine village

Swiss authorities say rescuers have found the body of one of three people a day after they were swept away by a landslide that hit their Alpine village following massive storms and rain.

VIENNA — Swiss rescuers have found the body of one of three people a day after they were swept away by a landslide that hit their Alpine village following massive storms and rain, authorities said Sunday. The other two are still missing.

A woman was pulled alive from the rubble on Saturday morning.

“Today is a sad day,” said Ignazio Cassis, a member of the Swiss Federal Council, who spoke to reporters on Sunday after visiting the region to express solidarity with the victims on behalf of the federal government.

The man's body was found in a nearby river, authorities said.

A team of 200 rescuers has been searching for the missing since Saturday using excavators, specially trained search dogs, drones and army helicopters. But the likelihood of finding them alive is low, William Kloter, of the Swiss police who is leading the rescue operations, told reporters on Sunday.

Search operations had to be suspended overnight due to heavy rain.

The landslide hit a group of three houses in the municipality of Lostallo, in the Alpine Misox valley in Graubünden.

Swiss authorities also reported that a section of the A13 motorway leading to Italy had been completely submerged and destroyed by floods. The main transit route will likely remain closed between the key San Bernardino Pass and Roveredo for several months.
