An hour-long barricade in Silver Spring, Maryland, ended with a man shot and killed by Montgomery County police officers early Thursday morning.

The situation began around 11:40 Wednesday evening after police received a call from a family member about a person in distress at an apartment in the 3300 block of Hampton Point Drive. Montgomery County police spokeswoman Shiera Goff said an adult male armed with a gun was inside the apartment with his mother.

Once police arrived, gunshots were heard inside the apartment. Additional law enforcement, including a SWAT team, was called to the building as patrol officers began negotiating with the man.

Shortly after 2 a.m., the police decided to enter the apartment. The officers entered the residence and shot the man. He was taken to hospital, where he later died.

His mother and no other residents were injured, Goff said.

The man has not been identified.

Thomas Lester of the Maryland Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division said all officers involved in the shooting were wearing their body cameras. Images will be reviewed and made public within 20 business days.

Goff said the investigation is in its preliminary stages and more details will be provided soon.

Pursuant to Maryland law, the Attorney General's Independent Investigation Division will handle the upcoming investigation.
