A shooting investigation stemming from an incident earlier this month just outside Vicksburg city limits has turned into a murder case after the victim died Thursday at an area hospital.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said 27-year-old Devonte Gary died from gunshot wounds he suffered during a shooting Thursday, June 6, at the intersection of Gibson and Halls Ferry roads.

Pace said one suspect was already in custody following his arrest in Tyler, Texas, and two other suspects were wanted for first-degree murder.

Pace said Willie Johnson, 24, of Warren County, was taken into custody in Texas after law enforcement approached him for suspicious behavior and became aware of his warrant in Warren County.

Two other Warren County men, Calbert “Calbo” Cosby, 22, and Jermaine “Bones” Johnson, 45, remain at large.

Pace said the two wanted suspects are believed to be involved not only in the June 6 shooting, but also in a number of other shootings that have occurred in Vicksburg and Warren County in recent weeks.

“We believe other people are involved and it appears to be a targeted shooting,” Pace said. “These are not random acts of violence.”

As the investigation into the series of shootings continues, Pace said any information from the public is important to law enforcement, adding that calls can be made to the Vicksburg Police Department at 601-636- 2511, to the Warren County Sheriff's Office at 601-6361761 or anonymously. to Central Mississippi Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS. Pace said it's important to note that Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to an arrest.

Pace added that the scope of the ongoing investigation is broad, given that several shootings have occurred both in the county and in the city of Vicksburg.

“We worked on this case with the Vicksburg Police Department and it went smoothly,” Pace said. “I am very proud of the relationship we have with the police and this investigation is an example of that.”
