1 dead after teen mistook motorist for rival and shot at vehicle in The Woods, police say

An 18-year-old facing a murder charge told police he shot a passing motorist Thursday morning after mistaking him for someone he “had an ongoing feud with,” according to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by The Dallas Morning News.

Dallas police said no one in the passing vehicle was struck, but a 17-year-old sitting in the backseat of another vehicle nearby was hit. The 17-year-old, who later died, was seen on surveillance video hanging out with a group of people including the suspected shooter before the incident, according to the affidavit obtained by The news Friday.

Police identified the suspected shooter as Terron Moore. He was placed in Dallas County custody and held Friday afternoon on $1 million bond, according to online jail records. It was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney.

At 3:10 a.m. Thursday, police responded to a call about shots fired in the 7400 block of Pineberry Road, near Sorcey Road, in The Woods area, according to a Friday morning news release. An occupant of a vehicle traveling on the road called 911 after at least two armed men standing in the street with a group of people began shooting at the vehicle, according to the affidavit.

No one in the vehicle was hit by gunfire, police said. However, one of the people who was with the group earlier – who police identified as Christopher Wells – was shot and killed, according to the affidavit.

Members of the group drove Wells to a nearby emergency room, according to the affidavit. Once at the emergency room, two people got out of the vehicle with Wells before the driver left in the vehicle.

The two people, including one identified by authorities as Moore, were later arrested by police, according to the affidavit. Police have not identified the other person.

Wells was pronounced dead at the TotalCare emergency room in Cedar Hill at 3:50 a.m., according to online Dallas County medical examiner records.

Police took Moore to Dallas police headquarters, where he consented to an interview without an attorney present, according to the affidavit. He told police he started shooting at the vehicle on Pineberry Road because the group of people thought the vehicle was someone they knew and had an “ongoing feud” with, according to police. affidavit.

Moore feared that the people in the vehicle were preparing to shoot at the group in the car, according to the affidavit.

The vehicle used to transport Wells was later recovered by police. An inspection revealed what police described as multiple bullet holes in the vehicle, including near the back seat — where Moore said Wells was sitting at the time of the shooting, according to the affidavit.

Surveillance video reviewed by police shows Moore shooting toward the back seat of the vehicle. Moore identified himself in the video when police showed him the footage, according to the affidavit.
