1 dead after hit-and-run and shooting in Clearfield

CLEARFIELD, UT (ABC4) — A driver died Monday evening after being shot following a hit-and-run, according to Clearfield City officials.

Two vehicles were involved in a hit-and-run near Industrial Parkway in Clearfield Monday evening, officials said. One of the drivers involved called 911 and was chasing the other driver, who was trying to escape them.

While on the phone with the dispatcher, the driver continued to notify police of his location while the other driver pursued.

The vehicles eventually entered a neighborhood located approximately 75 N 1000 W in Clearfield. The driver of the fleeing vehicle “stopped in the middle of a residential road,” authorities said.

This driver then got out of his vehicle and approached the 911 caller.

“This encounter resulted in a shootout which cost the life of the driver of the fleeing vehicle,” officials said. “The 911 caller (driver of the second vehicle) was taken into custody and is currently cooperating with the investigation.”

The incident caused the closure of Highway 1200 West, from Highway 200 North to Highway 300 North, and officials said the roads are expected to be closed for several hours.

Police did not release the identity of either driver, but said the driver who died was a man in his 60s and the other driver was a man in his 30s.

Investigators with the Clearfield Police Department responded to the scene and planned to remain there for several hours.

Those who witnessed the hit-and-run and “resulting road rage incident” were asked to call Layton Dispatch at 801-497-8300 with any information.
