What to Do After a Car Accident in Santa Barbara County

No one can predict a car accident or collision, but you can prepare for one. Having a car accident checklist in your glove compartment can help you stay calm and organized after a car accident. He can tell you what to do, what not to do and how to best protect your rights. You are not alone after a collision, no matter how bad you think it may be.

Whether you are the injured victim or the family of a deceased loved one, here is what to do after a car accident:

  1. Stay calm – Stay at the scene and make sure everyone is okay. Check your injuries first, then check the others. Stay calm and do your best to regain your composure.
  2. Get to a safe place – Move your vehicle or park on the side of the road if you can. Turn on your hazard lights to warn other motorists of the accident. This gives them a warning to slow down as they approach. Find a safe place to wait for the police.
  3. Call 911 – Call the authorities to report your accident as soon as possible. The police can document the incident, collect information and record it in an official report.
  4. Exchange information – Exchange names, phone numbers and insurance information with other drivers involved in the accident. If possible, take photos of vehicles, license plates and other vital details.
  5. Don't admit fault – This is one of the common mistakes people tend to make after a car accident. Stick only to the facts of what happened when speaking with a police officer, but never admit fault or say “sorry.” However, be as detailed as possible in your description of the collision.
  6. See a doctor – Go to the hospital or your doctor as soon as possible. Immediate medical attention can help reduce the damage caused by your injuries. Tests and scans can identify internal injuries that may not yet show symptoms.
  7. Report it to your insurance company – Most insurers impose deadlines for reporting an accident in California. Call promptly and follow the officer's instructions to report your accident.
  8. Talk to claims adjusters – From the day of your accident, you may receive a phone call from the other party’s insurance company. You can talk to the adjuster, but don't give more information than necessary. Do not file a statement or accept an insurance settlement offer until you have spoken to an attorney.
  9. Create a file – Keep accident documents together and organized. Your file should include a copy of the police report, medical bills, information about the other driver, injury treatment plans, and any other documents you have collected regarding the incident.
  10. Call Our Car Accident Lawyers – If in doubt, call us at (888) 488-1391. We offer free consultations so you can discuss your car accident without risk or obligation.
