Teen Mom star Amber Portwood has opened up about the impact her mental health has had on her relationship with her now ex-fiancé, Gary Wayt.

On Thursday night's episode of Teen Mom, filmed before Gary's dramatic disappearance, Amber, 35, revealed the impact her condition had on their relationship. The MTV star suffers from borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder.

During the show, the mother-of-two described how her boyfriend had recently experienced a manic episode for the first time. Catching up with a friend, Amber described how their relationship was “getting serious” and heartbreakingly revealed her worry that her mental health issues would drive him away.

The episode is all the more poignant given how much has happened since filming began. Earlier this month, Gary went missing after an explosive argument with Amber, just two days after the couple announced their engagement.

After several days of searching for police, Gary himself called off the investigation by informing the police that he was safe. A few days later, news broke that he and Amber had decided to separate.

Before all this drama, Amber gushed about her relationship and even revealed that the couple was in therapy. Speaking to her friend Lexi, she said: “He really treats me like a queen,” adding: “It's something I don't want to mess up.” »

After describing how Gary had recently experienced one of his manic episodes, Amber spoke candidly about how these episodes – during which she can lose consciousness and remember nothing – have affected her past relationships. She said: “In the past, my mental health has definitely affected my relationships with my boyfriends.”

Earlier in the episode, Gary and Amber were filmed speaking to a psychiatrist about their relationship, during which Amber painfully admitted she feared being a “burden” to her boyfriend. She said: “I don’t want it to be too much for him. I don't want this to be a burden on anyone. »

An insider recently revealed that Amber has taken off her engagement ring and now acknowledges that Gary isn't the right man for her. Speaking to Us Weekly about their split, they said: “She's sad and she cares about him, but she's ready to see that he's not the right man for her. She wants to be with someone who fully accepts her.”
