Suspect identified in fatal incident on I-5 in Federal Way

Detectives have identified a suspect in the fatal stabbing and shooting on I-5 in Federal Way involving four people in a BMW Wednesday.

Washington State Patrol troopers were dispatched to the scene around 2:40 p.m. on northbound I-5 near 375th Street South. 911 calls reported multiple injuries to people in and around the BMW, which was partially in the right ditch. A shooting was also reported, according to a WSP news release.

Officers found a man and a woman with stab wounds who had walked away from the BMW. Another man was on the ground next to the BMW with multiple gunshot wounds. The driver was in the car with a large stab wound to the neck. He died at the scene, the statement said.

Police confirmed no other vehicles were involved.

At one point, traffic was backed up to the Puyallup River Bridge, the News Tribune reported. The crime scene was cleared after 11 p.m. that day, the statement said.

Investigators later determined that the man who was shot was the suspect. They believe he was sitting in the back seat when he stabbed the driver and two other passengers.

He remains in the hospital and, once he is medically cleared, will be booked into the King County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder and two counts of first-degree assault, the statement said. Detectives are determining who fired the handgun. The investigation is ongoing.

The names of those involved will not be released until charges are filed by the King County District Attorney's Office.
