Shooting between police officers in Cincinnati near the Music Hall: a man killed after a chase

Cincinnati police shot and killed a gunman suspected of stabbing a woman Thursday night, Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge said.

Police pursuit after stabbing and shooting has prompted the city of Cincinnati tweet that an “emergency” was occurring near Music Hall at 7:21 p.m. They gave the green light about 15 minutes later.

The victim of the stabbing incident, whose name has not been released, was in critical condition and underwent surgery at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Theetge said.

Here's what we know about the incident that prompted a heavy police response in the busy area near Washington Park.

What happened near the Cincinnati Music Hall

A gunman was fatally shot by police outside the Cincinnati Music Hall in Over-the-Rhine Thursday night.

The City of Cincinnati issued an X alert indicating there was an “emergency” in the area. The warning was issued around 7:20 p.m. and was lifted about 15 minutes later. Several events were taking place in the area at the time, including the opening night of the opera “La Traviata” at the Music Hall.

Theetge said the man was suspected in a stabbing incident in District 3, which serves Cincinnati's West Side neighborhoods.

Filming near the Music Hall on Thursday: Teresa Theetge takes stock

Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge provides an update on the shooting near Music Hall Thursday evening.

The suspect got out of his vehicle and pulled out a gun, Theetge said. Police asked the man to put down his firearm. When he did not do so, the police shot him.

Police have not released the name of the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Theetge said she did not know how many officers fired at the man. Witnesses reported hearing at least five shots.

The suspect's car sat on Elm Street, just south of the Music Hall, with two flat tires for hours. No bystanders or police officers were injured in the incident, Theetge said.

“So it's obviously very unfortunate that an incident like this would happen anywhere in our city, but especially in front of a jewel of our city like the Music Hall,” Theetge said, adding that the shooting was a “isolated incident”.

What motivated the police pursuit?

Police investigating a stabbing on Cincinnati's West Side received a description of a vehicle in which the suspect left. Police followed the vehicle to Elm Street in front of Music Hall.

The stabbing incident was “domestic in nature,” Theetge said, but the relationship between the suspect and the victim is unclear.

And after?

Cincinnati police are expected to discuss the shooting in more detail at a news conference Friday morning.

The Enquirer has requested documents about the incident, including body camera footage.

Enquirer reporters Bebe Hodges, Erin Couch, Sharon Coolidge and photojournalist Cara Owsley contributed to this report.
