(PUEBLO/CUSTER COUNTIES, Colo.) — Oak Ridge fire crews want the community to know how to prepare their homes for wildfires and how to reduce the risk of wildfires.

In a Facebook post, crews provided information called “The Home Ignition Zone” by the Colorado State Forest Service on how to mitigate the effects on your property.

Certain practices can be implemented to reduce the flammability of structures, including:

  • Remove all leaves, needles and other debris from all decks, roofs and gutters.
  • Replace combustible fences or gates.
  • Dispose of waste from tree and shrub thinning by shredding or transporting it to a disposal site or piling it in open areas to burn later.
  • Use tempered glass for windows; two or more shutters are recommended.

Crews said Beulah community members can haul and pile their slash daily at the Beulah Fire Station slash pile site. The site is designated for the removal of woody debris, including limbs and branches.

There will also be a free slop collection for Aspen Acres, San Isabel and Rye residents on Saturday, June 29 from 8 p.m. to 4 p.m. at mile 1.0 near Highway 165 on SH 78.
