Netcong NJ man charged in fatal Warren County shooting

A Morris County man was arrested Thursday and accused of fatally shooting someone in Warren County earlier in the day, authorities said.

Anthony J. Garvin, 34, of Netcong, has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose stemming from a shooting early Thursday morning in Independence Township, Warren County Acting Chief Deputy Prosecutor Kevin Brotzman said in a news release.

Police responded shortly after 8:15 a.m. Thursday morning to a shooting on Alphano Road, just near the border with Allamuchy in the normally quiet and densely populated Warren County township. Residents were ordered to shelter in place, and police blocked traffic Thursday along the 7-mile road, which runs south from Allamuchy through Independence Township and Great Meadows, an unincorporated community in Independence Township.

Authorities then located the suspect, identified by authorities as Garvin Thursday afternoon, and took him into custody, Brotzman said.

Authorities have not released any additional details, including the victim's identity or how Garvin was connected to her.

Garvin is being held in the Berks County Jail in Leesport, Pennsylvania, about 80 miles from where the shooting occurred. He is awaiting extradition to New Jersey to face his charges.
