Man arrested in 2023 fatal crash in Griswold

GRISWOLD, CT (WFSB) – A Rhode Island man has been arrested in connection with a fatal crash in Griswold last year.

State police said Cody Moorehead, 30, of Hope Valley, Rhode Island, was charged with second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle and driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol. drugs, reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle while license suspended, failure to drive properly and failure to drive in the correct lane.

State troopers served Moorehead with an arrest warrant Thursday while he was at Norwich Superior Court for an appearance.

The accident happened on June 26, 2023, on Voluntown Road in Griswold. Officers responded to the incident around 9:22 a.m.

Moorehead was driving a Ford F550 when he crossed the double yellow line and crashed head-on into a Mitsubishi, state police said.

Authorities said Zenon Zawadzki, 73, of Griswold, was killed in the crash.

Investigators learned that Moorehead was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash. He had Delta-9 Carboxy THC, fentanyl, norfentanyl and xylazine, which is used on animals, in his system.

Moorehead was issued a $500,000 bond.
