Florida men charged after deputies find 860 pounds of trash on road

A Winn-Dixie receipt, an empty can of Bumble Bee tuna and a pitcher of water were all the clues deputies needed to solve a trash case.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office was called June 2 to a road obstruction — 860 pounds of trash — dumped in the middle of a dirt road near Pierson. The trash was located on 9 Mile Point Road, in front of the entrance to the Lake George Wildlife Management Area.

The pile contained bags of pipes, vents and insulation, apparently related to heating and air conditioning work. As sheriff's deputies helped residents clear the road, Deputy Kaelin Darcy spotted the receipt, which was from Winn-Dixie in Holly Hill with a date and time stamp. On it were two cans of tuna, two pitchers of spring water and the last four digits of a debit card number. The can of tuna and the pitcher of water were in the middle of the pile.

So Darcy and another deputy went to the Winn-Dixie to review video surveillance from the purchase, producing leads on a possible suspect and a vehicle, a white pickup truck.

Using surveillance video along the roads leading to the dump site, including U.S. Highway 17, and interviews, Darcy wrote in her report that she was able to locate three suspects who were in the van on June 1 .

One of the three said they were working on an insulation job near the landfill and decided to leave it on a side road, rather than “drive to the landfill in the morning,” the report said.

This suspect also told Darcy that he pointed to a national park sign and told one of the others that it was a bad idea to leave the trash where they did, because he was likely there are surveillance cameras nearby.

A 51-year-old man and a 24-year-old man, both from Daytona Beach, and a 21-year-old man from Ormond Beach were both booked into the Volusia County Jail on misdemeanor littering charges and released this week, each on a bond of $2,500. They have not yet appeared in court.
