Community helps Cass County Sheriff's Office track down sex offenders – InForum

KINDRED, N.D. — Cass County Sheriff Jesse Jahner is praising Kindred residents for seeing something and saying something, after an incident involving a sex offender last weekend.

On Sunday, June 23, at Kindred Pool, people in the park noticed something suspicious happening. A man was driving slowly through the park, checking out the surroundings. The man walked away when people in the park tried to talk to him.

Cass County officials investigated the incident and discovered the person was Mario Marquez, 50. Marquez is a registered sex offender in Kidder County, about 60 miles west of Jamestown. He worked at Kindred. Marquez was charged with indecent assault of a minor in Texas in 2001. He is not registered in Cass County.

Jahner says the public's quick work helped the department determine that Marquez had violated sex offender registration, which could be a felony.

“It's always easier for us to come in up front and investigate things rather than wait, you know, several days later and then receive that information, because that can often cause us to use a lot more resources to try to piece together things are coming back together,” Jahner said. “The worst thing we don't want to hear is people thinking they're disturbing our office. That's what we're here for. We want to help people and we want to provide that high level of public safety “. .

Jahner said their report has been forwarded to the state attorney's office so they can review the charges.

He says they have no reason to believe Marquez is still at Kindred because the owner of his residence no longer allows him to stay there. Jahner encourages everyone to stay aware of their surroundings and continue to report anything they think is suspicious.
