Colleton County Fire Department's Edisto Island station renovated

EDISTO ISLAND, SC (WCSC) – Colleton County Fire and Rescue Station 20 on Edisto Island recently underwent major renovations to help the station operate more smoothly and more sure.

The metal building is nearly 30 years old, and Edisto Island's salty air has taken a toll on the structure.

Colleton County Fire and Rescue worked with a local contractor to ensure the station remained operational during the three-week construction period.

The contractor removed rusty exterior siding, replaced rusty doors and support structures, restoring the building to a new look.

“They will be able to use the building more than before,” said Colleton County Fire Capt. Kenneth Campbell. “By fixing this problem, we save money. This building will last, you know, another 50, 60 years before we have to do it again.

The department will keep a close eye on this station, as it often requires more work and repairs due to the salty environment.

“Anything that's going to be up and down the beach, at high tide or during a storm, you just can't get that salt off all those parts,” Campbell said. “It wears out the trucks and the buildings a little bit faster.”
