Activists Submit 17,000 Signatures to Call for Shutdown of Uranium Mine Near Grand Canyon

As of Thursday morning, environmental activists submitted more than 17,000 petition signatures calling on Gov. Katie Hobbs to shut down the only active uranium mine in the Grand Canyon region.

Taylor McKinnon of the Center for Biological Diversity says he has heard “radio silence” from Hobbs since he submitted a letter calling for the Pinyon Plain mine to be closed earlier this year.

“It may be politically uncomfortable for the governor to act here, but she has to do it,” McKinnon said. “She was elected to lead, make tough decisions, and protect intergenerational equity for Arizonians, and protecting the Grand Canyon’s groundwater should certainly be at the forefront of the Grand Canyon State governor’s mind.”
